Earlier this summer I captured a Pro Capture H run of a dragonfly doing a 180 degree turn while taking flight. Dragonflies can be erratic when taking flight but seldom change directions as abruptly as this maneuver. This run of 8 consecutive Pro Capture H images falls under the ‘slice of life’ category.

The photographs featured in this article were captured handheld at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington Ontario. I used my standard Pro Capture H settings with both Pre-Shutter Frames and Frame Limiter set to 15. I used a single, small auto focus point and shot at 60 frames-per-second. Some rolling shutter effects are visible in some of the images…. most notably the fourth one in the series. The eight images in this article were captured in a total of about 1/8th of a second.

Using a fast frame rate such as 60-fps allows a photographer to capture incremental body and wing movements of their subject and enables a broader selection of images from a specific photographic opportunity to be captured.
Not everyone has the financial capacity to travel to exotic locales to photograph subjects in nature. Leveraging technology like Pro Capture H can help a photographer capture interesting images of readily available nature subjects in their local area… like this dragonfly doing a 180 degree turn.
Technical Note:
Photographs were captured handheld using camera gear as noted in the EXIF data. Images were produced from RAW files using my standard approach in post. This is the 1,216 article published on this website since its original inception in 2015.
