This article provides readers with initial information on the OM System PEN camera that was launched today.

As our regular readers know, this is not a gear review site so we will not be doing any kind of a review on the OM System PEN camera.

Here are some links that readers interested in the new PEN camera may find helpful.

The links above will help get readers started with their research on the new OM System PEN camera. Many of the camera review sites and major camera retailers will likely also have information and/or reviews on this new product.

No doubt there will be plenty of follow up naysayer YouTube videos on the new PEN camera. All kinds of people will find something to nitpick and complain about with the new PEN camera.

They will claim that something important was left out. Or a specific feature isn’t as good as it is in more expensive OM cameras. Some may even state that OM System missed the boat entirely. All of these naysayer, clickbait videos are a waste of time.

Camera companies don’t invest a ton of development dollars into new products in a vacuum. New product concepts are evaluated against the needs of specific market segments based on quantitative research.

Probable sales volumes, margins, profitability, and price elasticity need to be estimated. Break even points are calculated with the best available information. If the marketing research numbers and financial analysis don’t pass investment thresholds, concept cameras don’t get developed.

Most companies use techniques like conjoint analysis to determine the best mix of features to meet the needs of the largest share of the target market. This basket of features and capabilities must fall within the market pricing that research indicates buyers would be willing to pay.

So… OM System has launched a new PEN camera. That tells us that the company has done its homework and feels that the product has the potential to meet the needs of specific buyers, and generate a good ROI (return of investment) for the company.

If you’re like me and the new PEN camera isn’t of any interest we can just accept that we are not the target market.

  1. Hi Tom it’s long lost me.
I liked the look of this for an OM systems walkabout camera.
The only issue to me is that the top plate is plastic and because I owned and loved my EM1-X I can’t do plastic!
Features wise it’s definitely good and imam sure it will sell well

    Kind regards

    Mark
