The first question that may be in your mind is, “Why create a street photography eBook that does not prominently feature people?” The introduction section in Street Photography Without People eBook provides a fuller explanation to this question.
In a nutshell, my strongly held view is that street photography which focuses on identifiable people… who are unknown to us… is intrusive and objectifies humans. Especially since many of these images are captured without a subject’s consent… or even being aware that a photograph of them is being created.
There is a veritable bonanza of photographic opportunities that can be discovered as we stroll along streets. To enjoy these treasures all we need do is open our minds. Respect the personal privacy of others. And, learn to see the world around us differently.
Evidence of human actions, creativity and ingenuity are all around us. These breadcrumbs of human experiences form a beautiful and vibrant trail that we can follow, and document with our cameras.
We can accomplish this without intruding on the personal privacy of others.
The Table of Contents identifies 14 subject areas that may pique our creative interest.
Street Scenes can provide a broader context for viewers. The absence of people in these scenes can help enable us to see the history and architecture with more clarity.
Architectural Details welcome us along every step of our journeys through urban areas. Each documents the history and creativity of our species.
Tables & Chairs provide a range of shapes, colours, textures, and creative expression.
Signage & Graffiti speaks volumes about the culture of the area and its people.
Things For Sale that we find document the life blood of neighbourhoods and communities. Proof of the everyday commerce that supports families and local economies.
Windows & Doors serve as examples of architectural styles and trends, and can also act as historical landmarks.
Transportation & Construction subjects identify the predominant modes of transportation, and construction methods, based on location, climate and culture.
Characters & Critters are regularly found during our street investigations. Asking permission to photograph pets usually elicits a positive response.
Through The Window enables us to see the offerings of various retail shops. They are often examples of beautiful, artistic displays.
Metal Castings & Structures can communicate feelings of purpose and strength. Many opportunities are at our feet.
Wooden Structures can provide grain and texture to our photographs, as well as add interest and character.
Along The Waterfront can reveal interesting colours, patterns and textures found in cables and ropes, barnacles, peeling paint, and rust.
Foliage & Flowers are a part of everyday life, and including them in our street photography can bring an environmental awareness to our images.
Colourful Oddities are often found along side streets, or decorations on older buildings, even on garments on display on outdoor hangers.
The objective of Street Photography Without People is to encourage folks to see beyond the people that populate urban settings, and find interest and beauty in a plethora of other image opportunities.
