I don’t know if it is a positive or a negative that I’m not a ‘gear head’ when it comes to camera equipment. I suppose this blog would have a much bigger audience if I spent my time doing numerous reviews of camera bodies and lenses. No doubt these kinds of technical insights are extremely important to a large portion of the photographic community. But…that’s just not me. I think a bigger and more important question is, “Are you ‘at one’ with your camera gear?” Continue reading Are you ‘at one’ with your camera gear?

Creating a Camera Buying Decision Matrix
Buying camera gear, especially for beginners and novices, or when considering “downsizing” one’s gear, can be a daunting task. One of the things that you can do to help make a well thought out decision is to create a camera buying decision matrix. What will be shared in this article is an adaptation of a technique that I have been using for a long time when doing business coaching. Continue reading Creating a Camera Buying Decision Matrix

In September 2016 it will be 5 years since Nikon launched the Nikon 1 system and it still remains much maligned and misunderstood. Continue reading Nikon 1 maligned and misunderstood
Photographing small sea shells with Nikon 1 J4
Sometimes plans go awry and we end up experimenting in ways we didn’t originally plan. So it was for me today. I was going to test my new Nikon 1 J4 with extension tubes at the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory, but discovered the facility is closed all next week. So instead I ended up photographing some small sea shells at home. Continue reading Photographing small sea shells with Nikon 1 J4
A morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4
I recently purchased a Nikon 1 J4 kit with the 10-30 mm PD zoom, and a Nikon 1 WP-N3 underwater housing. I bought both at very attractive prices with the intent of using the combination for occasional underwater images and video, as well as an inclement weather option for travel and landscape photography. Earlier today I went out for a morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4 and captured a few images. Continue reading A morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4
Zoom lenses to create a Nikon 1 Trinity
Regardless of the camera format that I’ve owned I’ve always preferred to use zoom lenses for still photography. Since I now shoot exclusively with the Nikon 1 system I thought it may be fun to write an article on my pick of lenses for an ‘unofficial’ Nikon 1 trinity. Continue reading Zoom lenses to create a Nikon 1 Trinity

My wife noticed that an Open House was being held today at a ‘proof of concept’ home in St. Catharines Ontario. We decided to take the drive out to have a look. Continue reading Images of shipping container home with 1 Nikon 6.7-13mm
Choosing a Nikon 1 All-in-One Zoom Lens
It is always important to consider your style of shooting and lens availability before selecting an interchangeable lens camera. Sometimes manufacturers make it difficult to choose lenses even after you’ve made your initial camera body purchase. This is the case for Nikon 1 owners. They have a few different ‘all-in-one’ zoom options to consider. This article discusses some considerations when choosing a Nikon 1 all-in-one zoom lens. Continue reading Choosing a Nikon 1 All-in-One Zoom Lens
1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 at Bird Kingdom
As part of my field work for my upcoming hands-on review of the 1 Nikon 10-100 mm f/4-5.6 lens, I spent some time at Bird Kingdom today. What follows are some sample images taken hand-held at the facility with my Nikon 1 V2. Continue reading 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 at Bird Kingdom
Comparison of Shooting 1 Nikon 10-100mm lenses at f/16
I was out this afternoon doing a bit of field work for my upcoming review of the 1 Nikon 10-100 mm f/4-5.6 zoom lens. I was close to finishing up for the day at Dufferin Islands and came upon some small water features that I thought may have some promise as ‘smooth water’ subjects. I had neglected to bring any variable neutral density filters with me, and since I had left my tripod in the car I thought I’d use the opportunity to do a bit of an experiment. I had my 1 Nikon 10-100 mm f/4.5-5.6 PD zoom with me, along with the 10-100 mm f/4-5.6 review sample that Nikon Canada had arranged. Shooting 1 Nikon 10-100 mm lenses at f/16 is something I hadn’t purposely tried before so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Continue reading Comparison of Shooting 1 Nikon 10-100mm lenses at f/16
