Praying Mantis at Night Test

This article features a selection of praying mantis at night test images that were captured handheld using in-camera focus stacking and the M.Zuiko 60 mm f/2.8 macro lens.

Sometimes Mother Nature provides a photographic test opportunity which represents a significant challenge. Such was the case yesterday night when a praying mantis decided to perch on the glass panel of my kitchen’s patio door.

Spoiled by Technology

Lately, I’ve been wondering more and more if photographers have become spoiled by the technology found in their camera equipment. Over time, we’ve been treated so well by camera manufacturers that many of us fail to really appreciate the incredible image making power of the gear we hold in our hands every day. There really is no such thing as a ‘bad’ camera system today.

100-400 with FL-700WR

This article shares a selection of bird images captured handheld with the M.Zuiko 100-400 and the FL-700WR flash unit. I recently renewed my annual membership at Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls. Since I had not yet used the M.Zuiko 100-400 zoom with the FL-700WR flash unit, I thought my recent visit to Bird Kingdom was an ideal opportunity to do so.

Favourite Nikon 1 Images

This article features some of my favourite Nikon 1 images in a range of photographic genres including birds, flowers and travel. Other subject matter is also included.

I find it rather bizarre that it has been over five years since the Nikon 1 product line was discontinued… and the system still gets criticized in 2023. For whatever reason Nikon 1 seems to be a camera system that many people love to hate.  *shrugs*

Importance of Ergonomics

The importance of ergonomics was strongly reinforced for me this past weekend when I participated in a ‘one time only’ extended family event. It was one of those occasions when you absolutely want to come away from a gathering with as many good quality photographs as possible. As we all know, many life events have no chance for a re-do.

Barn Swallows

This article features a selection of handheld photographs of Barn Swallow… many of which are in flight. The images were captured at Hendrie Valley. In my local area I typically have many more opportunities to capture images of Tree Swallows as compared to Barn Swallows. This is mainly due to an abundance of nesting boxes that are frequented by Tree Swallows.

Kingbird Harassing Raptor

This short article features a selection of six consecutive images of a kingbird harassing a raptor in mid-air. An experienced associate has advised that the raptor is an immature Cooper’s Hawk and the aggressor is an Eastern Kingbird (thanks Glen). All photographs were captured handheld with an E-M1X using Pro Capture L in combination with Bird Recognition AI Subject Tracking.

Pro Capture Choices

The number of Pro Capture choices that can be created with almost every attempted image run is both incredible and addicting. After using Pro Capture H and L for a number of years now, I cannot imagine owning a camera that did not have this technology.

This article shares 15 consecutive handheld photographs of two dragonflies briefly meeting. These 15 frames were captured in a total of 1/4 of a second.
