Every now and then we all need a short break and a bit of relaxation. So it was for me this afternoon, so I grabbed a camera and headed off to Forty Mile Creek in Grimsby to see what I could find. Continue reading Ducks by Forty Mile Creek

Hummingbirds in flight with Nikon 1
I’ve been burning the midnight oil recently with client work and I really needed a break. So, I spent a couple of hours on Saturday morning at Ruthven Park in Cayuga Ontario with the intention of capturing some images of hummingbirds in flight with my Nikon 1 gear. The importance of light and details in zoo photography
Like most photographers I enjoy going to the zoo to view the variety of animals, getting some exercise, as well as taking some images. During a recent visit to the Metro Toronto Zoo I had the opportunity to capture a number of images that I thought may be fun to share with readers. Finding light and details at the zoo can contribute to some interesting image captures. Continue reading The importance of light and details in zoo photography
Cormorants in flight with Nikon 1 J5
From time to time I like to go out on a limb and try something experimental just for fun. Before I get too far into this article I’d like to thank one of our readers (and a fellow photography writer) Ross Chevalier for sparking the idea for this article (you can check out his site here). In one of his comments Ross suggested that it may be possible to use elastic bands to affix a Hoodman or Zacuto Z-Finder to a Nikon 1 J5 and create a viewfinder. Sounded like an interesting idea to me so I tried it, then went out to photograph some cormorants in flight with the Nikon 1 J5. Continue reading Cormorants in flight with Nikon 1 J5
Photographing bees with Nikon 1 J5
I thought it might be fun to try photographing bees with the new Nikon 1 J5 so I went out in the backyard for about 40 minutes or so to see what kind of images I could capture. Continue reading Photographing bees with Nikon 1 J5
Insect photography with Nikon 1
As a follow up to my recent article Using Nikon 1 for Flower Photography, I thought it would be fun to use my Nikon 1 V2 and Nikon 1 CX 30-110 mm f/3.8-5.6 VR and Vello Auto-Focus Extension Tubes to capture some images of bees and insects in my garden. Continue reading Insect photography with Nikon 1
Osprey in flight
Both professional and amateur bird photographers often have their favourite subjects – and many have a special affinity for birds of prey. I was extremely fortunate to capture a range of images of osprey in flight during a recent morning visit to Mountsberg Conservation Area, near Campbellville Ontario. Continue reading Osprey in flight
Blackbird Chasing a Hawk
If we’re lucky from time to time we get the opportunity to capture an interesting bit of nature playing out before our eyes. I had one such opportunity on Saturday afternoon when I was able to photograph a blackbird chasing a hawk in flight. Continue reading Blackbird Chasing a Hawk
Brown Pelicans in Flight with Nikon 1
Earlier this year my wife and I went to the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina for a brief holiday. I had the opportunity to capture a few images of brown pelicans in flight with my Nikon 1 V2 and Nikon 1 CX 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR zoom lens. Continue reading Brown Pelicans in Flight with Nikon 1
Photographing hummingbirds in flight without using flash
Most people who enjoy taking images of birds will attest to the fact that it can be especially challenging to photograph hummingbirds. Continue reading Photographing hummingbirds in flight without using flash
